    Time allocation between paid and unpaid work among men and women: an empirical study of Indian villages

    The paper examines the time allocation between paid work (wage earning or self-employed work generally termed as employment work) and unpaid (domestic chores/care work generally termed as non-employment work) along with wage rates, imputed earnings, and occupational structure among men and women and according to different social groups to establish the extent to which the rural labour market is discriminated by sex and social group. The major objective of the paper is to show the differential in wage income between men and women in farm and non-farm activities. The paper also shows the division of time between employment and non-employment activities by men and women. The paper uses high-frequency data and applies econometric techniques to know the factors behind time allocation among different activities across gender. The study finds that males spend more hours on employment work and work at a higher wage rate than females. As a result, a vast monetary income gap between men and women is observed, even though women worked more hours if employment and non-employment activities are jointly taken into consideration. Time spent on employment work and non-employment (mainly domestic chores) has been found to vary significantly due to social identity, household wealth, land, income, education, and skill. The segregation of labour market by sex was evident in this study, with men shifting to non-farm occupations with greater monetary returns and continued dependence on women’s farm activities. Enhancing the ownership of land and other assets, encouraging women’s participation particularly among minorities, and improving health are some of the policy recommendations directed from this study to enhance participation in employment work and shifting towards higher wage income employment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    SDSS-IV MaNGA : star-formation-driven biconical outflows in the local universe

    We present a sample of 48 nearby galaxies with central, biconical outflows identified by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO survey. All considered galaxies have star-formation-driven biconical (SFB) central outflows, with no signs of an active galactic nucleus. We find that the SFB outflows require high central concentration of the star formation rate. This increases the gas velocity dispersion over the equilibrium limit and helps maintain the gas outflows. The central starbursts increase the metallicity, extinction, and the [α/Fe] ratio in the gas. A significant amount of young stellar population at the centers suggests that the SFBs are associated with the formation of young bulges in galaxies. More than 70% of SFB galaxies are group members or have companions with no prominent interaction, or show asymmetry of external isophotes. In 15% of SFB cases, stars and gas rotate in the opposite directions, which points at the gas infall from satellites as the primary reason for triggering the SFB phenomena

    SDSS IV MaNGA : star-formation driven biconical outflows in face-on galaxies

    We find 132 face-on and low inclination galaxies with central star formation driven biconical gas outflows (FSFB) in the SDSS MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO) survey. The FSFB galaxies show either double peaked or broadened emission line profiles at their centres. The peak and maximum outflow velocities are 58 and 212 km s−1, respectively. The gas velocity dispersion reveals a mild dependence on the central star formation surface density compatible with models of gas dispersion powered by the Jeansinstability in gas clumps or by gasturbulence dissipation. We estimate the gas outflow rate and conclude that the central gas depletion time does not depend on galactic mass. In turn, the ratio of the gas outflow rate to the gas consumption rate by the star formation is low in massive galaxies and high in low mass objects, while the star formation is a more rapid process of the gas consumption. We compare properties of the FSFB galaxies with a control sample of 375 comparison galaxies and find that the FSFB objects have high central concentration of star formation and also younger central stellar population with respect to their periphery. We analysed the environment of the galaxies and identified nearby satellites and elements of low surface brightness structure. We see that many tidal-enhanced features that can be assigned to early and intermediate stages of galactic interaction are much more frequent in the FSFB galaxies with respect to the comparison sample. We conclude that the gas should be replenished via the accretion from small satellites

    Active galactic nuclei signatures in Red Geyser galaxies from Gemini GMOS-IFU observations

    Red Geysers are quiescent galaxies with galactic scale ionized outflows, likely due to low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We used Gemini GMOS-IFU observations of the inner~1–3 kpc of nine Red Geysers selected from the MaNGA survey to study the gas ionization and kinematics. The emission-line ratios suggest the presence of Seyfert/LINER (Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Region) nuclei in all sources. Two galaxies show Hα equivalent width ( Hα EW) larger than 3 Å (indicative of AGN ionization) within an aperture 2 . 5 of diameter (1.3–3.7 kpc at the distance of galaxies) for MaNGA data, while with the higher resolution GMOS data, four galaxies present Hα EW>3 Å within an aperture equal to the angular resolution (0.3–0.9 kpc). For two objects with GMOS-IFU data, the Hα EW is lower than 3 Å but larger than 1.5 Å, most probably due to a faint AGN. The spatially resolved electron density maps show values between 100 and 3000 cm −3 and are consistent with those determined in other studies. The large (MaNGA) and the nuclear scale (GMOS-IFU) gas velocity fields are misaligned, with a kinematic position angle difference between 12◦ and 60◦. The [N II] λ6583 emission-line profiles are asymmetrical, with blue wings on the redshifted side of the velocity field and red wings on the blueshifted side. Our results support previous indications that the gas in Red Geysers is ionized by an AGN, at least in their central region, with the presence of outflows, likely originating in a precessing accretion disc

    Precessing winds from the nucleus of the prototype Red Geyser?

    Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are present at the centre of most galaxies, with the related mass accretion processes giving origin to outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). It has been presumed that only intense winds from luminous AGNs were able to suppress star formation until the discovery of a new class of galaxies with no recent star formation and with the nucleus in a quiescent state showing kpc scale outflows. We used SDSS MaNGA and Gemini Integral Field Spectroscopy of the prototype Red Geyser Akira and found that the orientation of the outflow changes by about 50° from its nucleus to kpc scales. A possible interpretation is that the outflow is produced by a precessing accretion disc due to a misalignment between the orientation of the disc and the spin of the SMBH. The precession of the central source is also supported by a similar change in the orientation of the ionization pattern. Although similar behaviour has commonly being reported for collimated relativistic jets, the precession of an AGN wide wind is reported here for the first time, implying on a larger work surface of the wind, which in turn increases the star formation suppression efficiency of the outflow

    The production of ionizing photons in UV-faint z~3-7 galaxies

    The demographics of the production and escape of ionizing photons from UV-faint early galaxies is a key unknown in discovering the primary drivers of reionization. With the advent of JWST it is finally possible to observe the rest-frame optical nebular emission from individual sub-L^* z>3 galaxies to measure the production of ionizing photons, ξion\xi_\mathrm{ion}. Here we study a sample of 380 z~3-7 galaxies spanning -23 <MUV_\mathrm{UV} < -15.5 (median MUV_\mathrm{UV}\approx -18) with deep multi-band HST and JWST/NIRCam photometry covering the rest-UV to optical from the GLASS and UNCOVER JWST surveys. Our sample includes 109 galaxies with Lyman-alpha emission detected in MUSE spectroscopy. We use H-alpha fluxes inferred from NIRCam photometry to estimate the production rate of ionizing photons which do not escape these galaxies ξion(1fesc)\xi_\mathrm{ion}(1-f_\mathrm{esc}). We find median log10ξion(1fesc)=25.33±0.47\log_{10}\xi_\mathrm{ion}(1-f_\mathrm{esc})=25.33\pm 0.47, with a broad intrinsic scatter 0.42 dex, implying a broad range of galaxy properties and ages in our UV-faint sample. Galaxies detected with Lyman-alpha have ~0.1 dex higher ξion(1fesc)\xi_\mathrm{ion}(1-f_\mathrm{esc}), which is explained by their higher H-alpha EW distribution, implying younger ages, higher sSFR and thus more O/B stars. We find significant trends of increasing ξion(1fesc)\xi_\mathrm{ion}(1-f_\mathrm{esc}) with increasing H-alpha EW, decreasing UV luminosity, and decreasing UV slope, implying the production of ionizing photons is enhanced in young, low metallicity galaxies. We find no significant evidence for sources with very high ionizing escape fraction (fescf_\mathrm{esc}>0.5) in our sample, based on their photometric properties, even amongst the Lyman-alpha selected galaxies. This work demonstrates that considering the full distribution of ξion\xi_\mathrm{ion} across galaxy properties is important for assessing the primary drivers of reionization.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to A&
